John D. Lloyd and Gary L. Slater (2014) Abundance and Distribution of Mangrove Landbirds in Florida. North American Fauna: Number 80: pp. 1 45.

A rather intensive 3-year study found the five most commonly recorded birds in Florida mangrove swamps were in order of abundance: Red-bellied Woodpecker, Northern Cardinal, Prairie Warbler, Red-winged Blackbird, and Great Crested Flycatcher. Mangrove Cuckoos were most concentrated along the shores of Biscayne Bay and Upper Key Largo with an estimated FL population of 6400+ (should be a cinch to find eh?). Red-bellies had an est. pop of 86,000+ while Black-whiskered Vireo at 20,000+ and White-crowned Pigeon at 15,500+. Well worth a look by S FL birders. Published by the US Fish and Wildlife Service.
