A 300mm lens on a 35mm camera (where a 50mm lens is considered normal) or equivalent in other formats will get you the ability to get decent ID shots in most situations, and you can take excellent photos of large birds (e.g. Herons) and of very close smaller birds.

To get better working distance, you'll find that a 400mm lens (or equivalent) does a lot better with the smaller birds. By the time you get to 600mm, you can get good shots of anything close enough to see well. It is important to keep the shutter speed high with such a long lens.

In my case, I use a 100-400 zoom on a Canon 7D (APS-C format), which is equivalent to a 160-640mm zoom on 35mm. I am pretty happy with it.
