For the purpose of bird ID & documentation, I almost always set my zoom lens to maximum telephoto, yielding an optical magnification equivalent to a 600 mm lens on a full-frame DSLR camera.
My shots are handheld & use burst mode & use SanDisk 64 GB Extreme Pro cards.
I prefer lightweight equipment, so I mostly use a point-and-shoot camera with non-interchangeable lens (Leica V-LUX 4 with constant aperture of f/2.8 even at maximum telephoto). (The similar Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ200 is less expensive.)
Sometimes I use a slightly heavier mirrorless Micro Four Thirds camera with interchangeable lens (Olympus OM-D E-M1 or M5 or M10 with a 300 mm zoom lens, equivalent to 600 mm). This was used in my "Broward: Malachite" post on the TAS BirdBoard.
