Visited Wakodahatchee Preserve in southern Palm Beach county on May 31, 2014. Spent hours watching baby and juvenile birds waiting on nesting islands to be fed.
Nesting Birds included:
Wood Storks - counted 37, so there are probably more which were out of view.
Great Blue Heron - great show with parents feeding young
Purple Gallinule
Florida Gallinule (Common Moorhen) with babies and juveniles
Tri-colored herons
Least Bittern
Black-neck Stilt
Snowy egret
Double-Crested Cormorant
Anhinga - babies and juveniles (do they lay eggs twice in same year?)
Other birds which were not seen nesting:
Mottled Duck
Black-bellied Whistling Duck
Red-wing Blackbird
White and Glossy Ibis
Green-backed Heron
Common Grackle
Red-bellied Woodpecker
and many more -
Go see it for yourself. Open daily 7 am til sunset. Restrooms and water fountain in parking lot across from entrance to boardwalk. Don't forget your zoom camera and binoculars!
