But the cat is not a native predator, does not have to face all the natural challenges a native predator has to face. If the cat is someone's pet it gets fed all it needs, sleeps indoors and is just not part of the native ecosystem. Birds have evolved to face the dangers from native predators, but not from cats since house cats are not part of the north American ecosystem, period. 100 million birds a year are killed by house cats, and it's probably the single biggest killer of songbirds.
