Yesterday at Horse Country I witnessed a fight between a C. Gallinule and a Black-necked Stilt. The gallinule almost drowned the stilt and held it under water with its emormous feet. When the gallinule let go the stilt waded and limped away slowly. It didn't look too good. I hope it survived. There were 2 other stilts and the gallinule chased them off. It sure had something against them. The gallinule had 6 large pied-billed grebe sized chicks (out of the original 9 tiny black chicks it had in April). The pond also had 2 Egyptian Geese and nearby saw White-crowned Pigeons and a Loggerhead Shrike eating a lizard. Just east of Snapper Creek Canal some 10 Cave Swallows were gathering mud in their bills and flying under the bridge. Probably in order to build nests.
