This morning, I completed my annual breeding bird survey in Everglades National Park (along 25 miles of the main park road from Flamingo up to the Dwarf Cypress Forest). As always, the mosquitoes were horrible at 6:00am when I started the survey in Flamingo. Bug numbers decreased dramatically as the morning progressed. Following are the 34 birds I saw or heard along the way:

Green Heron - 1

Swallow-tailed Kite - 7 (plus 2 fledglings)
Red-shouldered Hawk - 9
White-crowned Pigeon - 2
Mangrove Cuckoo - 2
Barred Owl - 2
Red-bellied Woodpecker - 23
Northern Flicker - 2
Great Crested Flycatcher - 13
Eastern Kingbird - 2
White-eyed Vireo - 1
Black-whiskered Vireo - 1
American Crow - 58
Carolina Wren - 2
Common Yellowthroat - 6
Pine Warbler - 1
Prairie Warbler - 1
