Hey all,

Late this afternoon we had the chance to swing by Pine Tree Park in Miami Beach to follow up on Frank Schena's report of a BAHAMA MOCKINGBIRD. We arrived at the park around 6:30p.m. and began our search which was rather short. The community garden was easily located on the north side of the park. We walked around the fenced off area a few times before we heard the bird sing to our north, but outside the park. Soon thereafter we saw a mockingbird fly into the Banyan Tree in the NE corner of the park. We located the bird and were able to see the white under tail spots and streaked flanks well, but the lighting was poor. A few minutes later the bird began to move around and eventually began preening in better lighting. After preening it flew down and began foraging along the northern fence line of the community garden. On the floor the malar stripe and overall brown tones of the bird were evident as was the different behavior. The bird caught a worm while thrashing around the edges of the shrubs, it kept its tail cocked and worked the ground quickly and deliberately, finding prey quite easily. We watched it until it flew into the tree on the NW corner of the community center, here it preened and sat for a long time before choosing a higher branch to roost on. Good luck to anyone chasing :)

Nature is Awesome
