Only three people joined me for this morning's TAS Big Cypress National Preserve trip (Note to self: No more trips on Mother's Day). We started at the Oasis Visitor Center, where the only birds of note were a few Purple Martins on the visitor center antenna. At Monument Lake campground, we saw more martins, plus Limpkin, Black-necked Stilt, Downy Woodpecker, White-eyed Vireo and Eastern Meadowlark. Northern Bobwhite was heard. At Kirby Storter Boardwalk, we saw or heard Red-shouldered Hawk, Pileated Woodpecker, Great Crested Flycatcher, White-eyed and Red-eyed Vireo, Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Wren, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher, Northern Parula and American Redstart. A Northern Flicker was heard on Loop Road's Gator Hook Trail. Common Grackle was the dominant species at Sweetwater Slough. A Yellow-billed Cuckoo was heard and a Northern Waterthrush and two American Redstarts were seen. Another redstart was along the Tree Snail Hammock nature trail across from the Environmental Education Center. A few Wood Storks and a Roseate Spoonbill were in a roadside wetland east of the environmental center. Two Fox Squirrels, a cottonmouth and numerous alligators were seen along Loop Road.
