Looks like his tongue got lodged outside the throat. It might cost him his life eventually if he can't successfully feed, though there was a GBH at Wakodahatchee who had a similar throat injury who successfully fed, and breeded, for at least 3 years - she was regularly seen each nesting season with a mate, and a nest full of chicks, so she managed to still feed and stay alive despite the injury. Her tongue was also protruding, at least partially, and the wound had closed around it permanently.
