I took the Red-cockaded Woodpecker tour & the Picayune Strand tour for the SW Florida Birding Festival last weekend. Carlos, the new recreation specialist (OK, he's the first one they've ever had) showed us a wonderful time, and we successfully saw the Red-cockaded Woodpeckers as well as a wetland within the Strand where there were great flocks of Blue-winged Teal and Snowy Egrets and even White Pelicans and a few shorebirds - the pelicans were kind of the last bird I expected to see that day. It's so great to see that this ecologically important place was saved from development.
We had a great time camping out the night before, too! If you haven't seen Picayune Strand you really should, it's got camping, trails, facilities to keep horses overnight, hammocks, wetlands, pinelands, wow. I really think TAS should consider a trip there. Contact Carlos Bustos at 239-3500 x 123 or bustosc@doacs.stte.fl.us
