Today I visited Windmill Park in Coconut Creek in search of the ducks seen last weekend. One of the first birds I saw upon arriving to the southside of the lake was the female Bufflehead. I saw Mottled Ducks (some looked like MallardxMotted), about thirty Lesser Scaup (mostly females), about ten Ring-necked Ducks, and twenty-five Ruddy Ducks. To get to the park from the Turnpike, exit onto Sunrise Boulevard on head west. At Lyon's Road, turn right (north) for about .3 miles. The park will be at your right (east). The lake is just north of the parkinglot, so take the path between the tennis courts and volleyball net.
I wanted to see if there was anything interesting around Pompano Dump, so we headed north on Lyon's to Sample Road and went east. At Powerline Road, we went north then east on Green Road. Almost immediatly we turned left into the parkinglots around the large warehouses. The pond had a couple Ring-billed Gulls, but a "medium-sized hooded gull" further down had a lot of black on the hood and seemed rather petite. We drove down to the other end of the lake, but it had taken off along with the other gulls on the lake. Red-tailed and Red-shouldered Hawk, Peregrine Falcon, both Great Black-backed and Lesser Black-backed Gulls were in the area. This area probably has quite a few nice gulls but I think it's underbirded. The large lakes around it may host Horned Grebe and diving ducks.
