A group of 27 terrific participants joined the TAS bird walk today in ENP. In spite of breezy conditions, we tallied 80 species. [See Trey's great photos.] Highlights: "in-your-face" Barred Owl at West Lake and an extremely cooperative perched Whip-poor-will as we were leaving.
Other birds of interest: Hooded Merganser, American Bittern, "Wurdemann's" Heron, Roseate Spoonbill, Bald Eagle, Short-tailed Hawk, Swainson's Hawk, Peregrine Falcon, Limpkin, American Avocet, Wilson's Snipe, 5 woodpecker species, Vermilion Flycatcher, Brown-headed Nuthatch and 9 warbler species.
Early risers birding Lucky Hammock/Annex added other good birds before the walk: Sandhill Crane, 3 more Swainson's Hawks, 3 more Barred Owls, Least Flycatcher, Orange-crowned, Black-throated Blue and Magnolia Warblers and Painted Bunting.
Many thanks to all the birders who joined us today, especially many who drove long distances.
