Hey all,
Birded the west section of Matheson Hammock Park yesterday. Besides the colorful exotics that were present, Neotropical migrants were around as well. The West Hammock Trail provided a few skulkers including the bird of the day, a SWAINSON'S WARBLER! Along this trail we also saw HOODED WARBLER and OVENBIRD. Most of the activity was near Trailhead #12.
Along the edges of the hammock it was apparent that COMMON YELLOWTHROAT had come in with this last wave of migrants. EASTERN KINGBIRDS were hawking insects above the hammock. Raptors were on the move as well, mostly accipiters were migrating overhead, but we also spotted a NORTHERN HARRIER, PEREGRINE FALCON and SHORT-TAILED HAWK. These birds were flying high in a thermal and would have likely been missed if it weren't for a flock of CEDAR WAXWINGS that circled above.
At dusk CHIMNEY SWIFTS and a COMMON NIGHTHAWK came out to feed in the fading light.
Nature is Awesome
