At the Kirby Storter boardwalk (Tamiami Trail, about 15 minutes west of Monroe Station) this past weekend, I spotted downy woodpeckers, a loggerhead shrike, and a wood stork foraging in the pond's greenery along with two white-tailed deer. There was also a very, very large snake in the water: a group of us were debating whether it was a python or a cottonmouth. In a book I have, it gives the maximum length for a cottonmouth as 4'. This snake looked to be easily 6', with a very broad girth.
Anyway, the big thrill for me was the panther tracks in the mud. A park ranger at Oasis told me about them. They may still be there -- on the south side of the boardwalk, as you get uder the cover of the trees. The boardwalk juts out to the right for just about 3 feet: look straight down and you'll see about 6 very large paw prints.
