The choice doesn't have to be, either the birds die or your loved ones die. In some airports, they use trained dogs to chase away the birds; presumably, the birds learn to stay away. I don't know if they tried this at FLL, they only mentioned loud noises in the article. But there are a variety of bird-repelling techniques. Seems to me that just because one or two birds from a flock die, the others wouldn't necessarily avoid the area (think about duck hunting, in the same wetlands year after year).
