This very dark-plumaged Downy has been drumming vigorously in a tree a few doors down from our SW Miramar home. Although females are known to drum, its behavior suggests it is a male as it has been very faithful to this tree and is a very persistent drummer. Perhaps the red on its head is obscured or replaced by the dark pigment.
