The raptor activity was great at the preserve yesterday afternoon. Alvaro Jaramillo, Mariel and I dipped on the mocker, but scored Swallow-tailed Kite, Broad-winged, Cooper's and Sharp-shinned Hawk. In addition, we found White-eyed Vireo and a good number of both Prairie Warbler and Northern Parula singing. We also had a House Wren singing a subsong which had us puzzled for a bit. A Painted Bunting, Common Yellowthroat, Catbirds and Cardinals rounded out the passerines we came across.

After leaving the preserve, we hit up Matheson Hammock Park in search of the La Sagra's Flycatcher. Alvaro still needed the flycatcher in North America so we were all high fives after locating the bird. We found it on the west side of Old Cutler Rd. near the gravel parking area. We also had the luck of watching African Redhead Agama courtship behavior and males fighting for what seemed to be the choice basking spot. A brightly colored male bobbed its head and then it's whole body as it approached a dull male that was basking. After a few push-ups the brightly colored male lunged sideways at the dull male and the two tussled for a bit before separating; the submissive male turned away, giving up its spot on the rocks. Moments later we spotted the brightly colored male basking in its victory, soaking in the warm South FL rays!

Nature is Awesome
