This morning I headed to ENP to look for Rails. No luck with the rails and it
was overcast eliminating much photography, so I decided to walk the trail
between Royal Palm and Hidden Lake.
I saw Pileated Woodpecker, Herons, Egrets, Northern and Louisiana
Water-thrush, White-eyed Vireo, Red-eyed Vireo, Least Flycatcher, possible Brown
Crested Flycatcher, Great Crested Flycatcher, Prairie, Black and White, Palm,
Black-throated Green and Common Yellow Throat Warblers.
On my way back I saw this Vireo by the wooden deck on Gumbo Limbo Trail. I
recognized it as a Vireo immediately, but couldn't place it. I pulled out my
guide and decided it may be a Cassin's. Last year I saw many Blue-headed Vireo,
but when I saw this bird Blue-headed didn't even cross my mind. It looked too
different.
It is probably just a Blue-headed Vireo, but if you are in the area, look out
for the bird. I didn't know what to look for specifically while I was there to
distinguish between the two. Its coloration matched a Cassin's including the
less distinct transition between the grey on the head and the white on the
throat.
I wish it hadn't been overcast, the photos would have been better. Oh, well.
Below is what I typically saw last year. Notice the distinct transition
between the grey head and the white throat. This photo was taken last week at
Sadowski.
I took these photos of this Meadowlark along Research Rd. while I
watched what I thought may have been a Snail Kite. All I saw was the color and a
flash of white on its rump. It was too far away to be sure. It flew behind one
of the landfill mounds and never reappeared.
