There is at least one buff-bellied hummer at Fairchild, except last year's directions are no longer valid. The shaving brush tree (Bombax) isn't in flower. There are half a dozen hummingbirds around, all along the path near the vine pergola. I found the buff-bellied in a Chinese hat plant near the desert display (with red glass spiky things from a fancy artist), and just south of there near a bench (McLamore Garden) at a Pavonia bahamaensis. There is another Chinese hat near the first one and right at the wall of the property, that hummingbirds frequent, so it might be possible to see it without having to pay the $20.00 admission fee. Listen for the chuckling chatter of ruby-throats, and the distinctive ticking of the buff-bellied.
