This morning I went to Aerojet Road (SW 232 Ave.) in hopes of seeing birds Larry Manfredi found at the beginning of the season. The Annex was birdy and later I dropped by Old Ingraham Hwy. to add a few more species.

Birds of interest: 3 calling rails (see note below) at south end; Northern Harrier, Sharp-shinned, Red-shouldered and Swainson's Hawk, Peregrine Falcon; Barred Owl (on wire); Limpkin; Sandhill Crane (4); 5 woodpecker species; Least Flycatcher (2); Bell's (at its designated spot 20 yds north of "Bump Ahead" sign), White-eyed and Blue-headed Vireo; Marsh Wren; Hermit Thrush (2); Ruby-crowned Kinglet; 14 warbler species, including Orange-crowned (2), Magnolia (2), Black-throated Blue (male and female), Black-throated Green (2), Worm-eating, Northern (3) and Louisiana Waterthrush; Savannah (numerous) and Grasshopper Sparrow (3); and Painted Bunting. I believe a Cape May is with the loose flock on Old Ingraham Hwy. I heard its distinct squeak but was rewarded only with a backlit warbler silhouette before it disappeared.

Rails: Of the 3 rails that called, one sounded like a King; expected and seen by numerous birders in this area. However, farther south along the sawgrass prairie, 2 rails called back and forth, sounding just like Clapper Rails, unexpected in this habitat. I'm curious if anyone else has seen or heard Clappers in this area.
