If I may, here are a couple of easier ways:
Put your mouse pointer at the beginning of the text you want to highlight. Press and hold the left mouse button, then drag the mouse across and/or down. When you're done, you let the mouse button go. Then you can hit backspace or delete to delete the text. This is good in case you want to delete only a portion of the text.
When I want to delete the entire box of text, I place my cursor anywhere in the box and hit Ctrl + A. This is the Select All command and will highlight everything at once.
