I spent this past Monday afternoon tracking down several exotic species in the North Miami and Miami Shores area. Native and exotic birds have begun setting up territory and seeking out nest sites. Parakeet flocks that regularly roost communally in the winter are now breaking into pairs or small groups and taking up cavities in often inconspicuous locations.
Among the species encountered were Egyptian Goose (1), Common Myna (4), Chestnut-fronted Macaw (26), White-eyed Parakeet(~50), Red-masked Parakeet (3), Monk Parakeet (~30), White-winged Parakeet (12) and Spot-breasted Oriole (3).
In terms of native birds, Broad-winged Hawks (2), Cedar Waxwing (4) Black-throated Green and Cape May Warblers and a Baltimore Oriole were observed among the more regular and expected species.
