I'm not sure if Margaret England will be posting a comprehensive trip report for the STA-5 outing from today, but since there are trips 2/16 and 2/17, I wanted to get word out for anyone on the fence about making the drive out there.
The two highlights were a male Cinnamon Teal and a Tropical Kingbird. The teal was just off the observation deck (scope necessary), and the kingbird was at the eastern end on the dike running north-south.
Other species observed include Fulvous Whistling Duck, nine other duck species (for eleven total), Snail Kite, Crested Caracara, Peregrine Falcon, American Avocet, Purple Swamphen and Limpkin.
A sharp adult Krider's Red-tailed Hawk was perched on the roadside about 5 miles south of South Bay on US-27. The bird had a nearly white head and extensive white on it's tail. It spooked before I could get a photograph.
Best,
Alex Harper
