While kayaking near Viscaya this afternoon, I found that several cormorants landed quite near my boat and spent time fishing around it. This is not something I usually experience, and I wondered if perhaps they are typically drawn by the presence of large animals such as sharks or manatees that break the surface and that might attract schooling fishes. (In fact, I encountered a manatee shortly after launching from the causeway.) What I figured out later is the the cormorants were attracted by the fishing rod in the rod holder on my boat. I was not fishing at the time, but they seem to know that the presence of a rod is often accompanied by discarded bait or released fish. Pretty sagacious birds, if they can link an incidental implement to a potential food source.
