Herring Gulls

Yesterday I went to Pelican Island near North Bay Village to check out what birds were around. A Common Loon was offshore, and a Peregrine Falcon flew by and landed on the tower. What was most exciting was the amount of Herring Gulls. They were constantly flying over southward in the late afternoon in small flocks. I estimate 250-300 Herring Gulls, which is more than I think I have ever seen in one day.

And for all those going on the South Dade trip tomorrow, bring your winter clothes! It will be in the 40s and maybe in the 30s inland (it always seems a couple degrees cooler once you head a couple miles inland from Florida City). I hope my orioles survive the freeze!

Alex
