Running a skiff to Cape Sable from Islamorada on Tuesday we found 7-8 Horned Grebes, 1 Common Loon, and numerous Red-Breasted Mergansers. A Frigate was over the Cape. I wish I would have known about those Grebes a few days earlier when we were counting out there. They were seen in the late afternoon in Rabbit Key basin and just East of Little Rabbit. They weren't there in the morning or perhaps were more concentrated just out of sight. I remember La Puma mentioning some time ago that his friend on the Park staff found a bunch near Rabbit Key, or was it Red-necked Grebes? That's a real healthy looking basin, at times it holds big tarpon, I bet those Grebes are there every year. Carl Ross Key (adjacent to Sandy Key) was ravaged by the storms, the Southern side (it's now split in two) lost all it's vegetation save for three black mangroves. A real heartbreaker. Tough break for all the migrants that depended on it. Suburbs can take a beating, but an ailing Park?
