Buntings appear overall to be very wary. Occasionally they will feed at the same time with a cardinal. Mostly they wait until a feeder is vacated before approaching. That is why I have multiple feeders---some with cages, to close out larger birds. I place my caged feeders in the back near dense shrubbery where they can hide and open feeders in the front for other birds. I have only had one sparrow in the past, but do get small flocks of Red-winged Blackbirds. These come to the caged feeders but come at a different time than the buntings and mostly stay in my front yard. I do have one caged feeder in the front and the other two are not caged. You just have to observe your particular yard and find out what works best. Make sure the feeders you have to attract buntings have plenty of white millet.
