Elaine Gordon-Enchanted Forest Park in North Miami is accommodating the normal array of wintering species in terms of numbers and diversity. The park has a decent resume and propensity to harbor something more unusual, but I couldn't pull anything up the other morning. Wintering warblers and other passerines are distributed well throughout the park, but as usual, the most were near the southwestern parking lot and playground.
Among thirteen warbler species were Orange-crowned, three Black-throated Blue Warblers, Worm-eating, and a Magnolia. The three typical vireo species were in attendance: Blue-headed, White-eyed, and Yellow-throated.
Cruising the Miami Shores and Biscayne Park communities was profitable in terms of turning up exotic species. Along with the usual White-eyed and White-winged Parakeets were six Orange-winged Parrots (which appear to be declining in NE Miami-Dade) and a pair of Spot-breasted Orioles. A single dark-morph Short-tailed Hawk diluted the group of vultures just as the thermals began to form.
