The male Piping Plover with the moniker of Rocky returned to Crandon Beach for his 7th consecutive winter. Rocky was banded in 2006 and during his first two breeding seasons, he placed egg-shaped rocks in the scrape and incubated them. The eggs hatched, the rocks did not. He has since become an exemplary parent and his mate usually winters on the FL west coast. Perhaps separate vacations is the key to success?

Also on the beach today was a female Piping Plover from Cross Village, MI. She's spending her 5th consecutive winter on Crandon Beach. In addition to the Black-bellied and Semipalmated Plovers, Ruddy Turnstones, Dunlins, Short-billed Dowitchers, Sanderlings and Least Sandpipers, there were 3 Wilson's Plovers, a Bonaparte's Gull and a Reddish Egret.
