A total of 16,644 birds of 121 species (108 countable, 13 non-countable) were tallied by 30 observers during the 37th Miami Christmas Bird Count, held on Saturday, December 17.

Unusual species seen include 131 Black Scoters, seen off Miami Beach and Virginia Key, 1 Tennessee Warbler, seen in Greynolds Park and 2 Nashville Warblers, also seen in Greynolds Park.

Species seen in record numbers for this count include the aformentioned 131 Black Scoters, 8 Lesser Black-backed Gulls, 70 White-eyed Parakeets, 4 Orange-fronted Parakeets, 31 Chestnut-fronted Macaws, 21 Blue-headed Vireos, 11 Black-throated Green Warblers, 17 Yellow-throated Warblers, 26 Prairie Warblers and 19 Black-and-white Warblers. Three each of Yellow-throated Vireo and Northern Waterthrush tied previous count records.

Not seen for the first time in the history of the count were Black-crowned Night-Heron and Sandwich Tern. Not seen for the second consecutive year, after being tallied for the first 35 years of the count, was Common Ground-Dove. Only 1 Burrowing Owl was seen, at Miami International Airport. Only 13 Red-winged Blackbirds were seen, all by Jean Quincy along the Little River.
