Miami Shores- Common Loon

Today my Dad, brothers, and I took advantage of the beautiful day and decided to rent a sailboat for a couple hours. We rented from Pelican Harbor near North Bay Village. We headed north along the channel, and looking west towards Miami Shores I saw one Common Loon sitting pretty close to Bayshore Park on Miami Shores. My dad then took us for a closer look, and we were able to get pretty close without putting ourselves at risk of running into shallow water. There was also a Magnificent Frigatebird, Herring and Lesser Black-backed Gulls, and at least three Great Black-backed Gulls (all adult). I was hoping for a Horned Grebe or a scoter, but a loon will do. I too have noticed the large numbers of loons this winter. I have seen at least six since late November.
