Happy New Year to all of you who have been interested and supportive in helping the wild macaws. I wanted to give you an update about their well being. 13 survived the hurricanes. Unfortunately, all the nest sites I know of have been destroyed. Since the palm canopy has also been destroyed, the macaws have been very hungry. Fortunately, a very special person has been there to assure their survival. She has betweeen 11 and thirteen macaws showing up at her feeder every day and has been going through 50 pound bags every week. (Pre hurricane, she had 4 to 6 regulars) You can't imagine how thrilling it is to see them interact with each other in a totally wild environment. The wild macaws have not discovered my feeder I've put up in a park in CG. Maybe because every other bird in Dade County has discovered it (it's 18 feet high and safe) and maybe because they have left the area due to nest site destruction. A nest box is ready to go up as soon as I find someone to put it up-my gardener said he'll do it but has been too busy with post Wilma cleanup. If anyoneyone knows someone who can put it up please let me know.
