sea bird with "sideways" tail

Mon. evening while returning from fishing in Marathon, the boat was followed by the usual gulls/pelicans and a bird about the size of the gulls only more slender. It was black and had a tail that was shaped like a diamond fastened to its body by one corner. Not at all like gulls. I know that's not scientific, but I can't draw you the picture here. It flew fast and I only saw it twice. I think it was black top and bottom. We saw several frigate birds too. But, I'm curious and that image stays in my mind. What could that bird be?
