I had intended to post a happy end-of-year report on what would otherwise have been a very good morning of birding (I'll do a separate post later). After birding the park, I decided to walk out along the ponds east of Turtle Run Blvd as I could see a number of ducks and other waterfowl just out of binocular range.
At the end of the first large pond I found a dead Limpkin that appeared to have died within the last 12 hours, then another about 50 ft away. The first had no obvious signs of trauma; the second had been partially eaten and, judging by the smell, had been dead for a day or two (pics at the link). There was also an older carcass of a Muscovy Duck in the same vicinity. A third (live) Limpkin was cowering in the reeds a few feet away.
My question is: what, or who, is the likely culprit?
