Nashville Warbler and hawk tale

A Nashville Warbler was present for the Kendall CBC on the 24th. This cooperative bird was near the pond overlook area at Pinecrest Gardens (the old Parrot Jungle), seen by Bob Kelley, Marie Zeglen, and myself.

Later that day when I was helping to cover the UM campus, I was fortunate to spot a dark-phase Short-tailed Hawk diving straight down for over 100 feet, with its wings mainly closed. I had no idea at first what it was. When it emerged into view again, heading towards me, it was mixing with a Merlin! And 15 min later in a parking lot, I looked over my shoulder and was astonished to see it perched in a tree not 20 feet away, munching on what appeared to be a Palm Warbler or Yellow-rump. These sorts of things never happen at FIU . . .

Yesterday, what I thought was another Short-tailed Hawk over my house near FIU turned out to be a Broad-winged.

Good birding,
Susan
