I have not read the Audubon article but know of my own field experience that scarlet ibis were seen often on the Florida Flats when I fished with my father and guide Bill Mann. This would be 1947-1951. The Park was recently opened and Flamingo was still a "wild" place. The scarlet ibis were in the Snake Bight channel and usually in association with the herons, egrets, etc. The coloration was dramatic and competed with the roseate spoonbills.
