Activity starting to pick up a bit at Green Cay this past week - I visited on Saturday and again on Christmas Eve. Raptor activity has been pretty good - I've been spotting red-shouldered hawk, red-tailed hawk, sharp-shinned hawk, cooper's hawk, merlin, and kestrel, as well as a very aggressive and successful northern harrier who has taken several moorhens and a few sora too.

At least two American bittern are in the park - one quite large one who's been hanging along the north stretch, and the other just east of the chickee hut canopy area...both were out yesterday.

Pine, prairie, yellow-rumped, and palm warblers in abundance, with black-and-white warblers, and several blue headed vireo. On Saturday, the pines numbered possibly near 100 all through the parking lot and front entrance, with a few prairies and palms mixed in. Common yellowthroats and eastern phoebes are abundant throughout the marsh area. At the front feeders, painted buntings continue in good numbers, and two ovenbirds have been reliable - I spotted them on Saturday, and while there yesterday and heading out with a fellow birder, I mentioned that I usually see one at the east feeder, and sure enough he popped out of the brush under the feeder on cue.
