Now for something completely different...
This has been a busy week birding. I headed up to St. Mark's NWR Sunday
: afternoon to hopefully see and photograph some new birds for the year.
:
This is the landmark lighthouse at the end of the main road through the park
: on the gulf coast.
:
There were many more Armadillos in the Panhandle than down here. I felt like
: I was back in Texas.
:
Not a great photo, but I saw several Bald Eagles while there.
:
I was counting on seeing a Canvasback and a Carolina Chickadee.
:
:
I was also hoping to see geese.
:
I saw Canadian, Snow and Blue Geese.
:
:
This Carolina Wren was scolding me for entering its territory.
:
A Sora was unexpected, but nice to see.
:
This House Wren was begging for a picture to be taken.
:
St. Mark's was worth the trip. There were many more beautiful settings to
: photograph than time to do so.
:
:
:
: Greater Scaup
Lots of Ducks, but not as many as I expected.
:
:
: Red Head and American Wigeon
:
:
: Ruddy Duck
:
Seems that were ever I go, there is a Phoebe waiting for a picture.
:
: Chipping Sparrow
:
: I got really good looks at a Common Snipe.
:
: Song Sparrow, I think...
:
: Swamp Sparrow
:
: There were a lot of Yellow Rump and Palms around to keep things interesting.
:
: I saw this Yellow-bellied Wood Pecker and decided to look for the Red-Cockaded
: Woodpecker
:
So I purchased Bill Pranty's Guide at the park office to help me find the Red
: Cockaded. I did find the trees marked with the white bands, but not the subject
: of the trip. I did see a Downy Woodpecker.
:
I would give St Mark's a 10 on a scale of 1-10. I saw habitat that would be
: great during Spring and Fall migration along with the wetlands and the coastal
: flats make it an ideal spot to bird.
I then headed to Merritt Island.
