I have finally decided that I will start gathering information about COMMON MYNAS. I have seen Common Mynas since about 1982 were I saw my first ones nesting in the letters of a K-mart in Hialeah Florida. I wonder how long the birds were present before any birders saw them? I also saw the first birds to be reported in Key West, prior to the the Key West birds, I was seeing them all up and down the keys. I have also seen them in Everglades National Park on two different occasions. Once in Flamingo I saw two birds walking around the marina parking lot. These birds were promptly chased by an American Crow as far as I could see away from the area. I have never seen them back in Flamingo since. A year or so later I was along the main park road near Mahogany Hammock when I saw four birds flying in the direction of Flamingo. I figured that Flamingo was now going to have a population of Common Mynas! Well, I still have not seen any birds in Flamingo in a few years so it has not happened yet but probably will!! I have also seen them in Clewiston, Naples, Ft. Myers, Ft. Lauderdale as well as other areas of mainly the east coast of Florida. These bird are well established and should be on the A.O.U. list as well as the A.B.A. list.
What I hope to get from Florida birders as well as visiting birders is a list of how many birds were seen, where etc. etc. I have not done this type of thing before so if any one would like to give me some comments it would be much appreciated.
Here is what I think that I would need:
1. How many birds were seen.
2. Where were the birds seen.
3. Photos of any nest, eggs or young.
4. Dates on all sightings.
5. Any roost sites.
6. Any road kill birds for specimens.
I will modify this as I go along as needed.
Here are some helpful hints for locating Common Mynas:
Search in any parking lot any where in Florida and perhaps Georgia. They prefer nesting in the letters along the front of buildings of any kind of businesses. Any kind of cavity seems to work whether it is man made or natural. In South Florida they seem to favor palms as a roost tree, I have also seen them coming out of a roost that was in a large billboard! This billboard is located by the Denny's in Florida City. The morning that I saw them leaving the roost was pretty amazing. The birds all went directly for the Burger King restaurant sign just north of the Denny's. Birds kept piling on the sign which forced other birds to leave, I counted about 60-birds! I was not there to count birds so I am sure I missed many of them. Any fast food places are good for finding them.
Please send your sightings to my e-mail address below, you can send photos as well.
