I spent a couple days viewing the Townsend's Warbler and other wintering
birds in southern Dade Co and thought I would share my experience in
order to help others going for the bird. The Townsend's was not easy to
locate at times as it was back from Aerojet rd, deep in the hammock. I
arrived at 1:45 on Tue. and searched until dark without success even
though Angel, the original finder, joined me latter. On Wednesday
morning I arrived at dawn and was joined by Alex Harper and Paul Bithorn.
We saw the bird briefly, but it was in a tree way back in behind another
tree and we got poor looks at it through the gaps in the tree. I again
arrived at dawn on Thursday and joined up with Rangel Diaz and Toe. The
bird showed up and darted back and forth but we finally got good views.
Larry Manfredi joined me and we had very clear views of the bird. The bird
was always just past the speed bump on the left (east) side of the road
and the 3 spots it was seen are marked with red strapping tape.
I also had some other nice birds there including a Blue-winged Warbler that
came out of the tree I spotted him in and sat on the wire for several
minutes calling! I also had a Nashville Warbler, calling Least Flycatcher,
Summer Tanager, and Blue-headed Vireo. I spent one afternoon in
Everglades N P but things were very slow as far as bird sightings.
