I took three close friends camping at Johnathan Dickinson State Park this past Sunday night. Not a lot of birding was involved, but there were a few noteworthy sightings.

We stayed at the River Campgrounds, where we glimpsed a Whip-poor-will in civil twilight. Both Barred and Great-horned Owls could be heard here at night.

The scrub along US-1 that borders the east side of the park is home to several obliging Florida Scrub Jays that would sit up for us during our drives in and out of the park.

We spent most of our time surfing at Jupiter Inlet, which is the only place in SE Florida with consistent waves. From this beach, we watched a flock of about forty southbound Black Scoters make a pass along the beach.

Other wildlife sightings included Coyote, Southern Flying Squirrel, and Florida Green Water Snake.
