The little birds won out today at Loxahatchee.

We did have some good big birds including Turkey and Black Vulture, Red-shouldered Hawk, Northern Harrier, Osprey, American Kestrel, and Light Morph Short-tailed Hawk (kettling, as it usually does, with Vultures and, today, a Red-shouldered Hawk). We dipped on Ostrich, Cassowary, and Great Auk despite recent eBird reports. :)

The little birds won out because they were distributed nicely around the Visitors' Center, along Lee Road, around the C-6 Pavilion, and along the strand of Cypresses approaching the boat launch parking lot. Vireos included White-eyed and Blue-headed. Warblers included the three P's (Palm, Pine, and Prairie), Yellow-throated and Yellow-rumped, Black-and-White, and Common Yellow-throat. We spent so much time checking them all out that we never had time to check the waders along the Marsh Trail. (We are a very democratic group and tailor each walk to the wishes of those present -- not necessarily the majority but taking all interests into consideration.)

Woodies weren't quite as numerous as last week but they still held their own with Red-bellied, Yellow-bellied, Downy, and Pileated. Oh, if only we could get an Ivory-billed! (Though I, personally, would settle for an Imperial.)

Water levels and vegetation are not great shorebird habitat though we could hear the cries of Killdeer in the distance.

Snowbirds are expected to arrive shortly.

Until next Wednesday,

Rick
