No opportunities to scope offshore Key Biscayne lately but this afternoon there was a mixed scoter flock of 14-16 birds that included 3 male Surf Scoters and 1 female Black Scoter. The dark clouds made it difficult but looking at head and body shapes, my guess is that most of the flock was made up of Black Scoters. These are the first definite Surf Scoters for me this season.
Earlier today there were a couple of small flocks of Lesser Scaup, streams of Northern Gannets (mostly adults), 15 frigatebirds and a lone dark Pomarine Jaeger that came fairly close so that its bulky, chesty look and deep wing beats were apparent. Bait fish must be running because there were 2 dolphin pods feeding offshore. I guess the Spinners and Black Tips will be moving through soon.
