As I passed what remains of the Taylor Alexander Biome on the University of Miami Coral Gables campus late this afternoon a female Cooper's Hawk flew acroos the parking lot and landed in a tree along San Amaro Drive. This is about a hundred yards from where a pair nested a couple of years ago.
We were all saddened this week to learn that Taylor Alexander died on November 30th. He was a Professor of Botany at Um from 1940 to 1980 or so. He trained many of the local botanists from that period. He always asked me questions about local birds and shared his observations about what he saw them eating.
He created this native planting located at the northwest corner of the Cox Science Building and adjacent to the Gifford Arboretum in the late 1960s. It was later named for him. It has been a continuing source of bird, butterfly and dragonfly sightings for me over the years.
