Until March, I lived in Illinois. Most of the Monk Parakeets are on the south side of the city, down around 130th. There are loads of large nests and they come in to feeders. People in one neighborhood near Burnham and Brainard try to attract themm to their feeders.
: Still freezing up here in Chicago. While heading for the Shedd Aquarium the other day to check out the penguins, I heard, then saw, two flocks of about 10 Monk Parakeets. This was in Grant Park, just south of the Loop. I can see them thriving up here in the summer, but can't imagine how they handle the brutal winters (maybe by huddling over steam grates with other disadvantaged souls). Well, I guess these guys are no less tough than pigeons.
