Yesterday, I led members and guests of the [Fort Myers] Caloosa Bird Club on one of our weekly fieldtrips. We visited the following Collier County birding hotspots: Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk (finally opened after extensive repairs from damage due to Hurricane Wilma), the Turner River Road Area and the Kirby Storter Boardwalk off of the Tamiami Trail. Highlights of the 65 or so species seen were:
Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk:
Magnolia Warbler -- 1st winter female
Bald Eagle -- pair on active nest
Black-and-white Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Pileated Woodpecker (heard)
White-eyed Vireo
Tufted Titmouse
Great Crested Flycatcher
House Wren
Downy Woodpecker
Turner River Road area:
Limpkin -- one seen on Wagonwheel Rd.
Northern Harrier -- one plying the glades southside of Tamiami Trail near Everglades City
Blue-winged Teal -- several in freshwater pools f Tamiami Trail near Everglades City
Red-tailed Hawk -- jct. of Wagonwheel & Turner River Roads.
Greater Yellowlegs -- three seen along Wagonwheel Rd.
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron
Black-crowned Night-Heron
Kirby Storter Boadwalk:
10 warbler species:
Magnolia Warbler
Northern Waterthrush
Black-throated Green Warbler
Northern Parula
Black-and-white Warbler
Palm Warbler
Yellow-throated Warbler
Prairie Warbler
Yellow-rumped Warbler
Common Yellowthroat
Blue-headed Vireo
White-eyed Vireo
Tufted Titmouse
Eastern Phoebe
Carolina Wren
Downy Woodpecker
Yellow-crowned Night-Heron
Virtually everywhere we went, there were scads of all of the waders especially Great & Snowy Egrets and Wood Storks, with extremely high numbers of Green Herons. . . .
Other sightings: Cottonmouth (Kirby Storter Boardwalk); White-tailed Deer (Turner River Road); Red Admiral Butterfly (Kirby Storter Boardwalk); Swamp Lily (Big Cypress Bend Boardwalk); Glades Lobelia (Kirby Storter Boardwalk).
A good time was had by all.
