Today between 9:50 and 10:40, I scanned the bay looking east for grebes, loons, and ducks. With all these birds being reported from Titusville down to Homestead, I had to grab my bins and give it a shot. Royal and Sandwich Terns and a first-winter Lesser Black-backed Gull were all seen near the waters edge. A Spotted Sandpiper worked the rocky shoreline around the park's perimeter. I did not see much until finally a group of ducks came into view just south of the Broad Causeway. They eventually came in close enough to identify: Red-breasted Mergansers, about fifteen of them. Not exactly uncommon, but any day I see a duck besides a Muscovy I'm happy.
Tomorrow, the wind ESE is suppost to reach 10-20 mph. With that said, take some time to scan offshore. I remember there were a good amount of Black Scoters in November 2005, as well.
