Broad-winged hawk/goldfinches

A broad winged hawk was sighted last week at several hundred feet altitude cruising over Hoechoka Hammock (Sawgrass & University N.Broward). Now it is "in residence" so to speak and hunting the grass and open field area. I watched it make five passes on mourning dove over a two hour stretch...it had no success. But it did seem to be half-hearted about its approach.

Goldfinches are also about feeding heavily on nyger seed. Otherwise the usual, B-g gnatcatchers, p-p-and pinland warblers. Several phoebe are also present, flickers, red-breasted woodpeckers, a great heron, about 70 anhinga/cormorant are in the canal on the south side on the 24 acres. Mottled ducks are in the canals also and ruby-throated hummers are feeding on the few surviving hamelia with flowers.

And new sprouts are on all the trees as South Florida recovers from Wilma, and Rita, and KAtrina, and .........
