Biscayne National Park will be conducting our Christmas Bird Count (CBC) on Friday, December 20th from 8AM until 3PM. We will meet at the screened in porch area under park headquarters to go over some boating safety information and review the sampling protocol for the event. We will split into teams and travel via boat to various locations throughout the park to identify and record every bird we observe. Each team will break for lunch at Boca Chita Key before returning to the park headquarters to rally & tally. Unfortunately, boat capacity is limited therefore we must limit the number of participants. If you'd like to participate, please contact me in advance so I can sign you up and reserve your place on a boat. There is also the option to sign up online at http://birds.audubon.org/christmas-bird-count, but this option may not be available until we are closer to our CBC date. Please consider joining us for this annual event.

Some background on the CBC:
Every year since 1900, teams of interested birders have joined together across the country to count the number of individual birds within each species occurring on the same date in the same place. This huge task is coordinated by the National Audubon Society. The consistency of the count creates a viable set of statistics that can be compared and used to measure the effects that changes in the environment have had on bird populations. These measurements act as important warnings of environmental deterioration that should be heeded. In addition to the serious consequences of the bird counts, they are a fun way to spend a day with fellow birding enthusiasts. This is an all day event. Volunteers are needed for all areas.

Please forward this to anyone you know who may be interested in joining this effort!
